CLEVELAND -- Two Cuyahoga County agencies have begun investigations into the sudden death of R&B singer Sean Levert Sunday night while he was a prisoner at the Cuyahoga County Jail.
Levert, 39, had been in the jail since March 24, awaiting transfer to a state prison for being $80,000 behind in child support payments.

He told Cuyahoga County Judge Nancy M. Russo that he had a $50-a-day marijuana habit.

She sentenced him to two, consecutive 11-month sentences and he was to be turned over to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction as early as Tuesday, April 1.

Levert had gone through drug treatment, had his driver's license suspended and had numerous citations for driving without a license.

Since the death of his older brother, Gerald in 2006, Sean had been working to reconstitute their group "Levert" which carried their family name, as a legacy of their father, Eddie Levert, founding member of the legendary O'Jays.

Cuyahoga County Jail Warden Kevin McDonough said Levert had begun displaying "bizarre" behavior Sunday night, was placed under observation and restrained.

During a later check he was found "in distress" and was taken to Lutheran Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy is underway at the Cuyahoga County Coroner's office where spokesman Powell Caesar said Levert's body showed no signs of a violent death.

"No foul play, no trauma that we can see at this point," Caesar said.

Toxicology tests will be conducted that would reveal any drugs in his Levert's system.

Powell also said toxicology tests are being done but those results are usually not expected back for 4 to 6 weeks.

Gerald Levert, a Grammy award winner, was 40 when he died in his sleep at his home in Newbury in November 2006.

The LeVert family has a street named after them in their native Canton.
